SBC Webinar: Adapting to Extreme Heat
June 20, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 11:30 am
Join Sustainable Buildings Canada for a presentation of the recent report Irreversible Extreme Heat: Protecting Canadians and Communities From a Lethal Future. This report, from the University of Waterloo and Intact Centre on Climate Adaptation, provides guidance on the future of extreme heat events in Canada and how property owners and managers, designers, and planners can take action now to minimize the impact of these natural disasters.
Joanna Eyquem from the Intact Centre will review the findings of the report, which illustrates the effects of extreme heat, including hundreds of heat-related deaths across Canada in recent years. Joanna will review how, through daily practice, designers and planners can improve buildings in Canada to prevent the worst effects of these natural disasters. Canada is warming at twice the average global rate and our urban areas face the greatest risks because extreme heat is exacerbated by the urban heat island effect, which can be reduced through good design practices.
